I've decided that I need to broaden my range and try a few 'abstract' designs. Trouble is, I'm not really into abstract art so haven't got any points of reference. I hope that by producing some myself I'll get to appreciate it more. Does anyone have any tips or advice - favourite formulas or colourings for instance - as a good starting place. I've been trying out a few but only produced rubbish so far, so any help gratefully received.

Mags

Hi Mags

Try the KPK fomula's and UCL's or try to define what you are looking for a little more precise Smile

Do you like Giles Nadeau his fractals?

The best way is with your graphic program !

Abstract art is now generally understood to mean art that does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead uses shapes and colors in a non-representational or subjective way. In the very early 20th century, the term was more often used to describe art, such as Cubist and Futurist art, that depicts real forms in a simplified or rather reduced way - keeping only an allusion of the original natural subject. Such paintings were often claimed to capture something of the depicted objects' immutable intrinsic qualities rather than its external appearance. See Abstraction. The term non-figurative is used as a synonym.

I know bigH and therefore most of our fractals are abstract by definition, but I think Mags wants just something different from the spirals and stuff
she usualy does. That is why I asked her to be a little more precise Laughing

Your right Lil - I want to do some fractals that are not spirals, or flowers, or spheres - more just shapes and lines and colours. I've just posted my first effort to the list so you'll probably see it there. It's not quite what I had in mind but it's funny how these things develop as you go along.

I can do them in my graphics programme (PS Elements) quite easily - I want the challenge of making abstract fractals!

"pick your poison - they that can do do those that can't do abstract "
that's very unfair - it's not as easy as you might think - have a go!

Mags,
I respect your desire to do an abstract with a fractal program. If I want a picture of a tree, the best way to get it is with a camera, but there is nothing wrong with doing one in watercolor or oil.
With programs like UF it's tough to know when it's better to use it or PSP. UF has some of the same functions as PSP with layering and masking. Sometimes the challenge of doing it in UF can get out of hand. I know about out of hand images: http://home.comcast.net/~fractalsbykeith/pgs/frac148.htm
But hey, at least I took on the challenge and I feel pretty good about that.

I think you have already heard the answers. Look in the sam folder for glyphs and martsams and look in tma2 for gnarls. Flames make great abstracts too, if you can get them into UF.

I remain a fan of UF, there isn't much it cant do. Also I wonder if an abstract made in PSP or such, still qualifies as a fractal. Lets not forget Mags wants an abstract FRACTAL, not just an abstract image Confused Last time I checked PSP was not listed among the fractal programs Laughing

And yet another steep learning curve, when all she wants is a little more variation in the use of UF Rolling Eyes

To say it in plain words, she got bored with the spheres, spirals and flowers for a while........... wink

Anyway, thanks Keith - and everyone- for your input.

Can't help ya with abstracts I'm afraid.Anything i try to create looks like its come directly from a muckspreader Laughing
As for Keith's apo image, you are aware that he's from anther planet where the average IQ is 500+ and apo /UF is taught to degree level whilst still in the womb.Thats why all his work is so fantastic groupbow

Yep - I have that 'muckspreader' problem too! And you're definitely right about Keith - if you're reading this Keith it's meant with affection!!
